Rescue workers searching for a 10-year-old girl who disappeared in the sea off an Essex beach found a body in the water today close to the spot where she was last seen 24 hours earlier.
Stella Akanbi, from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, had been playing with a friend in the sea at Clacton on Sunday afternoon when they got into difficulties.
A man and his 12-year-old son tried in vain to save the girl when she began to struggle in depths of 10 ft and she let go.
An onlooker swam into the sea and pulled one of the girls ashore using a small inflatable dinghy, but he could not find Stella. This afternoon, a police helicopter crew spotted a body floating in the water close to where she had been swimming and it was recovered by an RNLI lifeboat at around 3.45pm.
Stella, a talented runner from Milton Keynes, had gone to the seaside with a ten-year-old friend and that girl's parents
